The National Bank of
Oman, one of the largest banks in the Sultanate of Oman, has today announced its support for the Oman Islamic Economic Forum (OIEF). The Forum, which will be held on 17th and 18th December of this year in Muscat, is attracting attention of individuals and institutions from around the world. Professor Humayon Dar, Chairman and CEO of Edbiz Consulting, welcomed that the support of such a prominent bank, which highlights the growing interest of Omani financial institutions in Islamic banking and finance. The OIEF will BRing leading thinkers and practitioners in
Islamic finance together to discuss the potential role of Islamic finance in Oman's strong financial markets. OIEF has also received the support of the Fatwa office of Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs in Oman.
The OIEF is jointly organised by Edbiz Consulting, an international Islamic finance consultancy, and Amjaad Developments, a multi-service investment company based in Oman. Oman's entry into Islamic finance remains in its nascent stage, with regulatory changes required in order to fully realise the potential of Islamic finance. Oman's strategy and direction for Islamic finance still needs to be fleshed out and the onset of an international conference such as OIEF will go some way in ensuring clarity and focus.
The OIEF will BRing together key stakeholders from the Islamic financial services industry to discuss the ways in which Islamic finance can play a role in Oman's economic future. It will be a unique opportunity for local and foreign players to network and to learn about some of the challenges that need to be overcome before Islamic finance can become a recognisable feature on the Omani financial landscape. Sheikh Nizam Yaqubi, who will be a lead speaker at the conference said, "I am pleased that the preparations for the Oman Islamic Economic Forum are making good progress. I am sure that the event will benefit all the stakeholders in Islamic banking and finance in Oman."
It is interesting to note that whilst the predominant theme of the conference will be on Islamic finance penetration in Oman, socially responsible Islamic institutions such as Awqaf & Zakat will be discussed in detail.
"This exciting announcement makes it clear that things are beginning to gain momentum in Oman, as besides the OIEF, other Islamic finance events of a smaller scale are scheduled to take place over the coming months," says Khalid Alyahmadi, Chairman of Amjaad Group. -Ends-
